Synopsis
Cartola is the story of one of the most important composers of Brazilian music and a history of samba based on one of its most noble figures. Using fragmented language, the film depicts a powerful panorama of Brazilian culture, inviting us to reflect on the construction of national memory and identity. The story is narrated by people who knew the composer, samba historiographers, and Cartola himself. The portrait of a man who rebuilt himself with his time.

Director
Lírio Ferreira started his career as filmmaker in 1992 with a short film, O Crime da Imagem. His first feature was Baile Perfumado, co-directed by Paulo Caldas. In 2006, he made Árido Movie, which earned him many prizes.

Hilton Lacerda wrote the scripts for the films Baile Perfumado; Amarelo Manga, by Cláudio Assis; and Árido Movie. In 1998, he co-directed a short film, Simião Martiniano - O Camelô do Cinema. Cartola is his first feature.
