The UPP (Unit Pacification Police) are the first step towards the
consolidation of a new policy of public security in the state of Rio de
Janeiro. It aims to occupy the territories taken from the slums by drug
traffickers, thus freeing their inhabitants. Victorious at first, the
UPP are the focus of social reflection around the country.
The 5X UPP series were directed by young filmmakers, residents of Rio's
favelas, who participated in the creation and making of the film “5 X
Favela - Now for Ourselves”, produced by Renata Almeida Magalhães, for
Luz Mágica and coordinated by Carlos Diegues.
Because they are all residents of communities of Rio de Janeiro, the
directors bring a vision "inside", original, visceral and sensitive
vision about the effects of the UPP in the communities.
All episodes basically talk about the impacts of peace and the presence
of UPP in the communities. Each episode delves into a specific point of
view of a particular social group involved in the process: “Bandits,” by
Luciano Vidigal, “Residents,” by Cadu Barcellos, “Police,” by Rodrigo
Felha, and “Asphalt,” Wagner Novais.

Biography of Directors:
The four young directors of the film are residents of different slums in
the city of Rio de Janeiro and participated as directors of
feature-length fiction 5X Favela - Now for Ourselves.
Novais Wagner studied film at the University Estacio de Sá. Felha
Rodrigo coordinates audiovisual courses NGO in Central Única das
Favelas. Luciano Vidigal worked as an actor in films like City of
Men and is Forbidden to Forbid, besides working as
a writer. Already Cadu Barcellos, the episode directed this film was his
third short film.
