Let’s make movies together
The distance between Brazil and Canada is nothing less than 40
countries, or more than 7,000 kilometres – not to mention the language
barrier and cultural differences. But despite this, the two nations
are growing closer and closer. Much of this proximity rests on the
shoulders of the two countries' film industries.
For years now, Brazilians and Canadians have been working together on
a number of audiovisual projects. Some of them reached the world’s
screen with great noise, like Blindness (directed by Fernando
Meirelles) did last year, but there is so much more going on behind
the scenes. Right now, for example, just a week before the opening
night of the Brazil Film Fest 2009, the two countries signed an
agreement that has the potential to set a solid foundation for more
partnerships between the creative minds of the two sides of our
continent. The idea of this new agreement is to exploit together the
creation of multi-platform documentaries and animations while testing
the waters of new models of international co-production.
We from the Brazil Film Fest are of the same spirit. Since our very
first year in Toronto, we have been promoting meetings, discussions,
panels to discuss projects, ideas and opportunities. This year, with
the support of BNDES (Brazilian National Development Bank), we are
once again investing in the sharing of information and networking,
diminishing the geographical distance between these two great nations.
